Eileen Walter – Fiddler and Teacher
Classically trained as a child, Eileen Walter took up fiddling almost 40 years ago and has been jamming, performing, participating in fiddle contests, and teaching ever since.
She has won many local and regional contests, including the Northwest Regional and Oregon State Adult and Senior Divisions, as well as placing in the top 5 of her age group 4 times at the National Contest in Weiser, Idaho.
She is in demand as a contest judge and has judged many contests in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Oklahoma. In 2004, 2008 and 2011 she had the honor of judging the national contest in Weiser, Idaho.
She is the current director of the Oregon State Fiddle Contest.
She is a former member of the Portland contra dance band Island, and a long time member of the Oregon Old-Time Fiddlers Association.
Eileen performs locally as Extra Measure with her husband, guitarist Jeff Walter. She has studied with some of the country’s finest fiddlers, and enjoys passing along her love of fiddling to others, through private lessons, group workshops, and community education classes.
Eileen teaches basic bowing and fingering techniques, a practical approach to basic music theory, and a variety of tunes by ear, or by the use of tablature or written music.
Lessons are tailored to each student’s particular interests, goal, abilities, and learning style, and are conducted in a supportive, positive, and friendly environment.
Her studio, Extra Measure Fiddleworks, is located at 6020 SE Lexington Street in Portland. Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 8:00pm.
